Magento 2 is the most cutting edge ecommerce platform in the market. It is a complete revamp of Magento 1.x and offers tons more features, enhanced usability and better security as compared to Magento 1. If you’re already on Magento 1.x, then upgrading to Magento 2.0 is the best way forward if you want to take your ecommerce business to the next level. The migration isn’t easy though and there are several areas you must consider, namely:

    • Customizations – Magento 1 custom functionality is not be compatible with Magento 2. If you have any customizations done on your Magento 1x store, they will need to be re-coded to support Magento 2.
    • Extensions – a lot of Magento 1 extensions are not available for Magento 2 as yet. If your current extensions are not available for Magento 2, they will have to be customized to support Magento 2.
    • Data Migration – Transferring store data is the most important part of the migration process since it involves moving store configurations, all your products and customers, sales data, your SEO setup and site content.
    • Design Migration – Magento 1.X themes are NOT compatible with Magento 2. So if your existing design theme is not available for Magento, you’ll either have to Hence, you’ll either have find a new store theme, or customize your existing Magento 1 theme to support Magento, or create a new custom theme from scratch.
    • SEO Settings – If you are using a third-party SEO extension or a custom built SEO solution, it may not work properly with Magento. That’s because SEO extensions and custom-built SEO solutions create an advanced SEO setup that cannot be transferred to Magento 2 with standard Magento migration tools. So you risk losing critical SEO data like custom URL formats, meta data templates, redirects, cross-links, markup tags, etc., which can seriously impact your site’s SEO performance.
    • Testing – Once you have migrated everything, you will need to test every aspect of your Magento 2 web store to ensure that everything works perfectly and all your Magento 1.X data is available on the new store. This requires considerable time and effort.
    • Timeline – you also need to keep in mind the timeline required for the migration. Depending on the number of products you’re selling, the extensions/customizations on your Magento 1.X store, etc. it can take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks to complete the migration process. So the sooner you start the process the better.

Why Migrate to Magento 2?

Magento 2 offers tremendous benefits over Magento 1.X thanks to plethora of features it provides.
Some of key benefits it provides include:

Improved UI/UX With Simplified Checkout

Magento 2 is mobile friendly and supports responsive design out of the box, from the default theme onwards. It also provides a faster, more streamlined checkout by eliminating the redundant Checkout as Guest / Login / Create Account options provided in Magento 1.X

Enhanced Caching

Magento 2 offers Full Page Caching out-of- the box along with support for Varnish 4. It is also compatible with the Hip Hop Virtual Machine (HHVM 3.6), which is used by Facebook to achieve on the fly PHP compilation, for increased page speeds.

Top Notch Performance with Enterprise-Grade Scalability

Magento offers vastly enhanced performance and scalability, with 50% faster page and catalog loading times through the use of techniques and technologies like in-browser static content caching, image compression, data bundling to reduce file download counts, added support for concurrent updates and use of jQuery and RequireJS for better management of JavaScript

Refined Database

One of the biggest improvements in Magento 2 is an optimized database indexer and optimized queries, which have enhanced query speeds and page load times.

Automated Testing Capabilities

Magento 2 comes with integrated automated testing capabilities such as Unit Testing, Integration Testing, Functional Testing, Performance Testing, Regression Testing etc. helping you automate quality assurance processes and cut down web store go-live times

Clean, Modular Code Base

The Magento 2 code base contains no up-optimized code and offers improved support for HTML 5 along with a superior CSS pre-processor. Customization is also easier with Magento 2 due to simplified upgrade processes and more streamlined themes and layouts (as compared to Magento 1.X).
